AN ARTS AND CRAFTS HANDPLANE.....

The 1/8" brass sides were fastened to the 3/8" cold rolled steel sole using mild steel pins that were later peened and filed flat. This is a very fast method of construction. The plane was built over a period of two days with other projects getting in the way. A second plane could easily be produced in eight or ten uninterrupted hours.
I had originally intended to leave the pins proud of the sides, similar to hammered brass tacks on Arts and Crafts furniture but it just didn't translate from the drawing to reality. The lever cap was fabricated from 3/8' brass stock and  hammered for the Craftsman look. Eventually the sides and levercap will develope a dark, even patina.

The infill is quartersawn white oak, and the handle is African blackwood. The 2' blade is O-1 tool steel.

The peculiar tote is surprisingly comfortable.

The plane is a little over 9" long and 2-1/4" wide with a 2" blade.
