Restored English screwdriver by Martin Hagen

Hello All,

Last week I wrote about some tools I bought the week before I posted some pictures already but I also wrote that I was restoring a screwdriver which was in the box to.

The screwdriver was in a horrible state bent, rusted (heavily) the handle was bruised etc.

I started by dipping the screwdriver into the citric acid bath. And after some hours and a little bit of help from friend Scotch Bright, I could remove most of the rust. I looked at it and thought shall I have a go and try to get it nice again. I had to file the screwdriver blade because there where many sharp bruises on it so I took a fine single cut file and started to file.

After this I took a diamond stone and polished as much as possible and gave it a rub with chrome polish. Then I used some steam to get the dents in the handle away and started scraping of the old lacquer after sanding the handle I didn't like the pale beech color so I used some water dye (mylands fumed oak) after drying and sanding away all the risen fibers I gave it another dab of color.

Left it dry overnight and put some Tung oil on the handle after 2 hours I started with my Orange shellac and tampon and after 4 days of several rounds of shellac it turned out like you can see here:

I think it looks good and will be another nice tool for my collection.

When taking pictures of the screwdriver I also took some other shots from some small planes which I bought in 1991 They where in a chest full of cabinetmakers tools I bought in the summer before I went to study at the Amsterdam furniture crafts school.

The planes are craftsmen made and I had never seen by then such small planes my collection has been growing since then and it is more an addiction nowadays. Pictures are been seen here:

So now I am going to look for a saw with a nib ;-)!! I  heard somewhere they where curious but also dangerous because of the curse of the bearded man with the Tomahawk......

Thanks for now and regards,

Martin Hagen
