Elk Horn Walking Stick by James D. Thompson

I recently decided to cut down a full sized walking stick because it was too heavy to carry for long distances. I converted it to a cane.

I decided to paint this one using artist’s oils. After several tries at colors, I decided this one was going to be LOUD! I went for red, white, and blue, but not in flag fashion.

I am no artist, and I wondered what those bottles of copal paint medium I found with the tubes of oil were for. Now I know that if you ever want the oil paint to dry, you need to use the copal.

You will note that all my finished canes and sticks have the fancy rubber tip. I get them from www.TreeLine.com and they cost roughly $10 apiece depending on the size you want.

I used a stainless steel 1/2” rod for the pin to dowel the elk horn to the cane. The rod was secured using CA glue. There was quite a bit of filing done on the horn to get it to be comfortable in my hand.
