GGs, It's hot in Oklahoma, we're in the 90's before noon and the tool hunting is hot; weather-wise, that is... There seem to be more tools out there this year, but it is obvious that the dealers are watching e-bay and think every tool should go for the highest prices. Most of the tools I'm seeing are things that I already have, with back-up and back-up for the back-up. Lots of modern (60's & 70's) saws, cheap off brand planes, Braces out the wazoo, plastic handled chisels, with the occasional decent tool here and there. After several hours of digging through the wreck of modern disposable life, I managed this weekend to come up with a nice A J Wilkerson 8" folding handle drawknife for the outrageous price of $18 not a gloat by any means but it is a nice example with good tight original handles and enough blade left to outlast me...
My only other purchase of the day was a Stanley #103 block plane, for which I also paid too much, $5. This is one I didn't have and I think it is a fairly nice plane even though most of the japanning has been worn off.
Spent the remainder of Sat in the shop piddling with a marking knife and doing some practice joinery. Made a few sloppy dovetails, they are slowly getting tighter. Doin' dado's, don't really need the practice but just enjoy the process. Cutting to the line consumed a large piece of Red Oak (I guess I could make feather boards from it), Okay I admit to just playing with my saws. A day spent not working on the house was quite enjoyable and left me refreshed and ready to continue on the forced renovation. BTW, here's the new marking knife, 01 tool steel, Bocote scales, brass pins....you can never have too many marking knives...
Best to all from muggy OK. Roy Griggs |
