Bench Top...

"I've been working on a new bench and will be finishing the top soon.  I've built a solid, trestle-style base but, at this point in life (kids in university), a maple slab is not in the cards. My solution for now is a 2.5" thick slab of laminated spruce 2x4s. It's a heavy slab and it's perfectly flat, but let's face it... it's softwood.

My plan is to cover it with 1/4" tempered masonite.  Do the porch gurus have any advice on the pros and/or cons of masonite tops?  My only real concern is that it may be too slippery."

I had a masonite top on my first bench, way back when. I grew to dislike it because it was kinda slick, if I nicked it, it looked like h*ll and left a raised area that was a pain to smooth down, etc.

I'd say to just go with the softwood top as it is. In other words, you're done. Start using the bench.

Sure, it will get nicked and dinged but so what? My maple topped workbench is nicked and dinged. It just adds character. It's at least honest wood and you won't have to fuss about trying to get a sheet of masonite stuck on there somehow.
