Shop Tours...Bob Sturgeon’s Shop Guided Tour
Greetings fellow lovers of old hand tools on and around the Porch. My name is Bob Sturgeon, I am 65 years old and very happy to be on this side of the grass. I have been a member of the Old Tool List for about ten months now and figured it was high time I dragged my old rocking chair up past the porch columns' and set a spell. I have been interested and foolin' around with old tools for about 40 years. Have a real passion for old crosscut and rip saws from about the 1950's on back. really like the ones with the old etchings and fancy scroll work. Passion number two would have to be old claw hammers from old hardware wholesalers like Belknap Bluegrass, Winchester, E. C. Simmons, Shapleigh, Van Camp, Hibbard Spencer & Bartlett (OVB) and others. Take a lot of pleasure in cleaning up and bringing old Saws and hammers back to life. My wife says she will have fun and make a ton of money selling it all one day when I'm on my way to the Big Tool Room in the sky.
This is the front of my Garage (on the right) and Shop (on the left) facing the house. Garage is 22’ x 18’, Shop is 12’ x 26’. The Patio is about 10’ x 22’ The only reason I am mentioning the Patio, is that my wife has requested that I build a Deck across the back of the house this coming spring. At this point can you see my mind kicking into gear. Very humbly I ask, what is to become of the Patio and at this point she replies, I don’t care what you do with it. I proceed to tell her I will try and think of something. Cut large door opening in shop wall facing Patio, frame up Patio and create L-Shaped Shop.
View from double doors. 70,000 BTU Kerosene heater, my best friend.
Table Saw with four foot out feed table and assembly table end to end. Out feed table can be folded down when not needed. 16 speed Drill Press on right.
12” Craftsman Band saw with fold down table, first and second red tool chests, Delta Grinder with grinding stone and fine wire wheel, Dremel Scroll Saw, User Tools and Levels on wall, Charger Panel for DC Electron Burners (under towel cabinet), Blue and Yellow Nail Bins.
Figure with built in clock, is FDR at the helm, dated 1933, writing on it says “FDR Man of the Hour”. Found this at an estate sale, asked my wife what part of the house do you think we should place this beautiful object of art in and she said, any part of the garage or shop you want to put it in. My being the one in charge, I thought it looked great in the shop. Parts cabinet, use to be a meat dept label cabinet from an old Kroger Grocery Store. Blue parts bins hold sandpaper and hand saw cleaning supplies.
The old workbench in this picture was one that my Daddy had built around 1928. The face is a full 2” x 12” timber across four 4 x 4 posts. The back is mounted to the wall. The top is made from two pieces of 2-½” x 15” timber laid side by side. The length is 11’- 2”, it use to be about 14’, but I had to cut off about 3’ in order to fit in my shop. My Daddy had a big old barn that this bench was in. The barn got in such bad shape it needed to be torn down, so I completely dismantled the bench and reconstructed it as you see it here.
The drawers are constructed from solid boards sides and bottom, with rabbits and dados. My Daddy was a professional carpenter, not a cabinet maker, but he knew how to build something that would last. Drawers slide on three solid boards with 1 x 2 runners each side. There are no pulls on the drawers, note notch cut at the bottom of draw opening for hand to pull on bottom of drawer. Just couldn’t see this fine old bench going to the scrap heap.
My Assembly and Cleaning Bench, two foot by four foot, is made from a reworked, oak Kroger Grocery Co. produce table. Two woodworking vises on the back corners, removable ½” oak dowels drilled into the tops of the jaws, ¾” round dog holes in both directions.
Collection of hack saws, compass saws, squares and pliers. Old Tool Box is original.
Old hammers, screwdrivers, hatchets, wrenches, and levels.
The phone I can never hear. Red tool chests #3, #4, and #5. Wonder if I have enough toolboxes?
Old braces, hand drills, bits, push drills and set of Belknap Bluegrass drill bits. One brace is a Winchester, bought for $5.00. Brace on bottom is a Belknap Bluegrass.
12” DeWalt miter saw with home made table and extensions.
Back to back sawtills holding 136 hand saws (Roy are you counting?).
More old hammers.
Hammers, old wooden mallet my grandpa built barns with. Notice worn circle from driving in barn pegs, string and holder to tie up meat packages in grocery stores.
Old collection of chisels, Disston one-man and two-man crosscut saws, Belknap Hardware Co. stock certificate, Bluegrass circular saw blade, grandpa’s old wooden planes used to make window sash. Price string tags, stickers and paper bags from Shapleigh, Stanley, Van Camp, and Belknap Bluegrass. No didn’t kill the buck, but do have several in the house on wall.
Craftsman Radial Arm Saw with Top I made. Two miter boxes marked Belknap Hardware & Mfg. Co
Two more back to back sawtills with 68 more saws. (Still counting Roy?).
Nail apron collection, block-smooth-jack planes, Irvin auger bits in oak case, and router bit cabinet. Roy Griggs wanted to see what 212 Hand Saws looked like. (Roy, there are 8 more over the old bench, waiting to be cleaned). Bob Sturgeon in Kentuckiana |
