The Green Man
Mr. Thompson,
You do incredible work. Sandy and I were looking at
Green Man sometime Thursday. It was a snow day
here. Even Sandy was oo-ing and ah-ing at the
detail. Carving is a side of woodworking that I
have never explored. Then somebody like Mr.
Thompson comes along and I remember why. I
probably don't have the patience for such detail. Green
Man has expression and the deep lines indicate age.
There must have been considerable thought before and
during the process to bring a little life into a flat
chunk of wood.
I studied a little bit of art in school (limited), and I
appreciate the value of the time spent on such a piece.
Guys, this is not just woodworking, this is art.
As is all craft that a person puts time into details
that he knows no-one else will ever notice.
Art is what we love to do and many of you probably
don't even realize your talent and real creative
ability. We put our minds to work at the things we
think we can do, then we refine and detail the details.
Then after we have built up the confidence to do what we
plan, we create our one of a kind pieces, with a passion
for what we create or, with a passion for what we USE to
create.
YES, the very use of our tools is art. I enjoy
the guys who exhibit the use of the tools. It is
closely a-kin to elegant dancing, another talent I will
never know. Being a good Baptist boy ya' know.
It is our passion, our outlet of creative thought.
It _is_ art.
Thank you Mr. Thompson for sharing with us. You
should share with all of the world.
