Snips... ;-)Saw Sharpening by Frank Sronce
I asked one of the workers in our local Woodcraft store if he happened to know anyone in this area who sharpened hand saws. (I picked the oldest worker there, on the theory that he might know what a hand saw was.) He told me no one was left who did this anymore, because it was much cheaper to buy a new saw than to have one sharpened. (He said he still had his father's sharpening tools and knew how to sharpen saws, but he was sure people would not be willing to pay for the eight hours of his time necessary for him sharpen a saw.) He said the only exception would be if you had an expensive backsaw like the LNs they sell. But he added that there was no need for anyone to sharpen those saws, because they were only bought by collectors who hung them on the wall or put them in display cabinets, not by anyone who was going to use them for sawing! With that attitude, I don't imagine their store sells many Independence saws. Frank Sronce |
